What is a floorcloth?

A Floorcloth (sometimes called an Oil Cloth, or Floor Mat) is a traditional early American floor covering made from durable cotton canvas that has been primed, painted, and sealed to last a lifetime. An alternative to the standard textile rug, the floorcloth is a unique expression of artistry and design acumen. Beyond being a beautiful decor statement, floorcloths are exceedingly durable, spill and water resistant, hypoallergenic, simple to clean, and offer protection for delicate floors. They are infinitely customizable in shape and scale, and, with proper care, will last for generations to come.

Why Choose a floorcloth?

  • In addition to their innate material beauty, utilitarianism, and simplicity, Floorcloths offer a connection to an artform that has long been forgotten or overlooked within the realms of interior design and home decor.

  • Studio Teppi aims to revive this lost craft in a way that is relevant to contemporary design language and which highlights the work of talented working artisans.

  • Floorcloths were born from a rich history of visual storytelling and were a way to chronicle themes, motifs, and historical events

  • Due to the unique manner in which floorcloths are constructed, they only become more beautiful with age and wear. The patina that a floorcloth will achieve over time is unparalleled by rugs, carpets, and other floor coverings.

Where can a floorcloth be used?

  • Due to their durability and water resistance, floorcloths are ideal for use in high-traffic and mess-prone areas such as: kitchens, pantries, dining rooms, mudrooms, and hallways.

  • Despite their ruggedness, floorcloths are the perfect way to add color and depth to any room in your home, and will set the stage beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, and children's rooms.

  • Floorcloth are best suited for use on hard, minimally textured floors. Placing the floorcloth on top of carpet (especially high-pile varieties) is likely to damage or shorten the lifespan of your floorcloth significantly.

Installation

  • Our floorcloth are shipped rolled in protective paper, and secured in a double-walled carboard carton

  • Be sure that the floor where you intend to place the floorcloth is clear of dirt and debris as any small items or imperfections on the floor may dent or imprint upon the floorcloth’s surface

  • We recommend installing an ultra-thin carpet pad beneath the floorcloth.

  • We recommend that felt furniture pads are applied to any furniture that will be resting on top of the floorcloth to prevent unwanted scratches

  • Note that your floorcloth might not lay flat immediately after unpacking, but rest assured that it will flatten out within a day or two

Cleaning & Care

  • Think of your floorcloth as an extension of the floor it is on. i.e.: vacuum, sweep, or mop as often as you would the floor that it lives on.

  • Surface spills and dust can be easily wiped away with a damp sponge or mop, using a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser

  • To extend the life of your floorcloth we recommend re-applying the wax coating yearly, or as needed by signs of wear.

  • When moving or storing your floorcloth it is best to roll the mat as you would a carpet and store horizontally in a cool, dry place. Be cautious not to fold or crease the floorcloth as this could cause the finish surface to crack.
